Inevitable Doom; you have been dismissed

I’m not saying we don’t have a right to be concerned. There’s some crazy shit going on. Things are definitely not what they used to be… But when have they ever been?
What I am saying is that we’re progressive beings, which at times involves some growing pains. An inevitable component of progress is the sometimes necessary counterbalance known as retrogression.
Certainly, record job loss, real estate bubble-bursting, and stock market nose-dives are evidence of decline. But it’s not necessarily a sign of the apocalypse.
Isn’t it time for a little fucking perspective?

Look where we’ve come from! Six Dollar Lattes, $13,000 handbags, Million dollar cottages. Seriously!? Pardon me if I don’t weap for you our nation. If we had a modicum of perspective we’d notice that we’ve just emerged from a period of reckless excess. And it seems appropriate that we sober up a bit from the numbing, drug-like effects of retail therapy.
Now, I don’t blame people for wanting to forget the shit that happened over the past decade. I don’t blame them for turning toward the seductive glow of their television screens to get a controlled dose of “reality”. I don’t even fault them for being apprehensive about the change they voted for. In fact, I think it’s sorta natural to want to hunker down when times are rough. Heck, it’s understandable to be nervous of the unknown.
But to be so afraid, that we run around telling everyone that unavoidable calamity is the only thing we have to look forward to. That’s not just irresponsible, it’s immature. It’s almost as if we get our news from Chicken Little.
Therefore, I do think people should be held accountable for their reactions, and frankly, any subsequent reactions to their reactions. In this regard, we’re all a part of a chain gang.
This is why all this Doomsday, Apocalyptic, Fear Mongering has got to stop. Period.

If I hear one more sentence begin with “In these uncertain times…”, I’m going to lose my shit. My question is, WHEN have times EVER been certain?
It is, however, certainly time for Obama to come out with his “Nothing to fear, but fear itself” speech. And, it’s about damn time we muster up the kinda courage that built our cities, roads, hospitals, etc…
We humans are capable of some pretty awesome stuff. Skyscrapers, Airplanes, Vaccines, Toilet Paper, Slinky. But if there’s one thing we’re capable of that sets us apart, it’s our ability to be rational.
C’mon! Seriously… what’ve we got to lose? Say it with me… Fear, Doom, Danger, Horror, Terror, Nightmare, Fear, Horror… DISMISSED!

Great post. I’ve always been tired of media outlets spewing poison to us sheep – we create enough of it ourselves. It’s another form of brainwashing that just perpetuates base-level human behavior. Fuck ‘em.
